Stainless Steel Sheet Sizes & Gauges: A Reference Guide

Ordering stainless sheet is easy once you know the standard sizes and how thickness is described. Keep this as a quick reference.

Standard sheet sizes

The most commonly stocked stainless steel sheet sizes are:

• 1220 × 2440 mm (4' × 8') — the most common general-purpose size
• 1000 × 2000 mm — a common metric size
• 1250 × 2500 mm — larger panels, cladding
• Coil — for volume users who slit and cut to their own sizes

Sheet can be cut to size for your specific job, which reduces waste versus buying full sheets.

Thickness — mm and gauge

Sheet thickness is given in millimetres, though "gauge" is still used informally. Common thicknesses for architectural and fabrication work:

• 0.8–1.0 mm — light decorative panels, cladding facings
• 1.2–1.5 mm — general fabrication, furniture, kitchen work
• 2.0–3.0 mm — heavier fabrication, base plates, structural facings
• 4 mm and above — plate, for heavy-duty and structural use

Note that "gauge" numbers differ between standards, so always confirm the actual mm thickness when ordering rather than relying on a gauge number alone.

Finishes on sheet

• 2B — a smooth, mildly reflective mill finish; the standard starting point
• No.4 / brushed satin — directional grain; the most popular architectural finish
• Mirror (No.8) — highly reflective
• PVD coated — gold, rose gold, black over a base finish

Grades for sheet
