SS 202 vs SS 304: When Is the Cheaper Grade Actually OK?

SS 202 is the most commonly mis-sold stainless grade in India. It is genuinely useful — and genuinely wrong for some jobs. Here is the honest breakdown.

The difference

Both are austenitic stainless steels, but 202 replaces much of the expensive nickel with manganese and nitrogen. That makes it cheaper, slightly harder to form — and noticeably less corrosion resistant than 304.

• SS 304 — roughly 18% chromium, 8% nickel. Excellent corrosion resistance.
• SS 202 — roughly 17% chromium, ~4% nickel, higher manganese. Moderate corrosion resistance.

Where SS 202 is acceptable

• Indoor, dry applications — interior grilles, furniture frames, decorative trim
• Budget indoor railings in low-humidity spaces
• Non-structural decorative work

Where SS 202 is a mistake

• Any outdoor or balcony railing exposed to rain
• Bathrooms, kitchens and wet areas
• Pool fencing (chlorine) or coastal projects (salt)
• Anything structural that must last decades

How to tell what you were sold

You cannot tell 202 from 304 by eye — both look like shiny stainless. A magnet is not reliable either. The only certainty is a grade certificate from your supplier. Ask for it.

The real cost comparison

202 may save 20–25% upfront. If it rusts and has to be replaced in two years, that saving becomes the most expensive decision on the project. For anything outdoors, use 304 — or 316 near the coast.
