SS Pipe & Tube in Bangalore: Sizes, Grades and How to Order

Ordering stainless pipe or tube sounds simple until the shop asks "OD or NB?". Here is what you need to know to order correctly in Bangalore.

Pipe vs tube — they are not the same

  • Tube is specified by outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness. Used for railings, furniture and architectural work.
  • Pipe is specified by nominal bore (NB) and schedule. Used for fluid flow and structural piping.

For glass railings and handrails you almost always want tube.

Common railing tube sizes

  • Round: 25.4mm, 38.1mm, 50.8mm OD — 50.8mm (2") is the classic handrail size
  • Square: 25×25, 38×38, 40×40, 50×50mm
  • Wall thickness: typically 1.0mm to 2.0mm for architectural work

What to specify when ordering

  1. Grade — 202, 304, 304L or 316
  2. Shape — round, square or rectangular
  3. OD / section size
  4. Wall thickness — this drives both strength and price
  5. Finish — mirror, satin or PVD
  6. Cut length — give exact sizes and save material

Wall thickness matters more than you think

Two tubes of the same diameter can differ hugely in price and rigidity because of wall thickness. For a handrail people will lean on, do not go too thin to save money — it will flex and dent.
