SS 304 vs SS 316 Stainless Steel: Which Grade Should You Choose?

If you are sourcing stainless steel for railings, kitchen fabrication or architectural hardware, two grades come up again and again: SS 304 and SS 316. They look identical, yet choosing the wrong one can cost you in rust, replacements and reputation. Here is how to decide.

The one-line answer

Use SS 304 for most indoor and general outdoor work. Step up to SS 316 when the metal will face salt, chlorine or coastal/marine air — its added molybdenum resists pitting corrosion that eats through 304 over time.

What actually makes them different

Both are austenitic stainless steels with chromium and nickel. The difference is molybdenum — roughly 2–3% in 316, and virtually none in 304. That small addition dramatically improves resistance to chlorides (salt, pool water, sea breeze) and to industrial chemicals.

• SS 316 — superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance, ideal for marine, coastal, chemical and high-hygiene environments.

Where each grade fits

Choose SS 304 for

• Indoor glass railings, balustrades and handrails
• Furniture, gates and decorative fabrication
• Kitchen equipment and general architectural trim
• Most Bengaluru interior and covered-outdoor projects

Choose SS 316 for

• Coastal and marine installations (within a few km of the sea)
• Swimming-pool railings and fittings exposed to chlorine
• Chemical plants, labs and food-processing lines
• Exterior hardware in high-pollution or high-humidity zones

Cost vs. lifetime value

SS 316 typically costs 20–30% more than SS 304 because of the molybdenum and higher nickel content. For a sheltered indoor railing, that premium is unnecessary. For a beachside balcony, 304 may rust in a couple of years while 316 lasts decades — making 316 the cheaper choice over the life of the project.

A quick field test

You cannot tell 304 from 316 by eye. Reputable suppliers provide the grade and, on request, a mill test certificate. Always ask — especially for coastal or high-value work.
