Balcony & Staircase Railing Height as per Indian Standards

Getting railing height wrong is not just an aesthetic issue — it is a safety and compliance one. Here is what the standards say and what it means for your project.

What the National Building Code (NBC) says

The National Building Code of India sets minimum railing (parapet/handrail) heights to prevent falls. As a practical guide widely followed for residential and commercial work:

• Balconies, terraces and horizontal edges: a minimum guard height of around 1.0 m (1000 mm) is commonly specified, and taller in high-rise or public buildings.
• Staircase handrails: typically 0.9 m (900 mm) measured vertically from the pitch line (the nosing of the steps).
• Higher-risk / public buildings: often 1.1–1.2 m. Always confirm with your local authority and the current code edition.

These are indicative minimums — your architect or local building bylaws are the final authority, and codes are periodically updated.

Baluster and infill gaps

Height alone is not enough. The gaps in a railing matter just as much, especially in homes with children:

• Vertical gaps should be small enough that a small child cannot pass through — a commonly used limit is around 100 mm.
• Avoid horizontal bars that a child can use as a ladder to climb.
• For glass railings, this is automatically solved — the panel has no gaps.

Handrail comfort and grip

Beyond the code minimum, a handrail people actually use should be comfortable to grip. A 50.8 mm (2") round tube is the most comfortable diameter for most hands, which is why it is the default handrail size. On stairs, keep the rail continuous and use adjustable brackets so it follows the flight cleanly.

Why this matters for material choice

A taller railing puts more leverage on the fixings and, for glass, needs correctly rated spigots and glass thickness.
