Stainless Steel Tube Size Chart for Railings and Fabrication

Keep this handy when planning a railing or fabrication job. These are the sizes most commonly stocked and used in architectural work.

Round tube — common sizes

• 19.05mm (3/4") — infill bars, light decorative work
• 25.4mm (1") — balusters, secondary rails, furniture
• 38.1mm (1.5") — posts, mid rails, lighter handrails
• 50.8mm (2") — the standard handrail size; comfortable to grip
• 63.5mm (2.5") and above — feature posts and commercial handrails

Square & rectangular tube

• 25×25mm — infill, light frames
• 38×38mm / 40×40mm — posts and frames; very common in modern railings
• 50×50mm — main posts, heavier structures
• Rectangular (e.g. 40×20, 50×25) — top rails and frames where a slim profile is wanted

Wall thickness guide

• 0.8–1.0mm — decorative only, not load bearing
• 1.2–1.5mm — typical for residential railings and handrails
• 1.6–2.0mm — commercial handrails, posts, anything taking real load

Thin wall saves money but flexes and dents. For anything people lean on, stay at 1.5mm or above.
