SS 316 vs 316L: What the 'L' Means and When It Matters

You have decided on 316-grade stainless for a coastal or high-corrosion job. Then the supplier asks: 316 or 316L? Here is the difference and when it actually matters.

The 'L' stands for Low carbon

Both grades have the same core recipe — around 16–18% chromium, 10–14% nickel, and the crucial 2–3% molybdenum that gives 316 its chloride resistance. The only real difference is carbon content:

• SS 316 — standard carbon (up to ~0.08%)
• SS 316L — low carbon (up to ~0.03%)

Why lower carbon matters — welding

When standard 316 is welded, the heat can cause carbon and chromium to combine at the grain boundaries (called carbide precipitation or sensitisation). This locally depletes chromium and makes the welded zone more likely to corrode — exactly where you least want it in a marine environment.

316L, with its low carbon, largely avoids this. That makes it the better choice for anything that will be welded and then exposed to a corrosive environment.

When to choose 316L

• Welded fabrications used outdoors near the coast
• Pool and marine hardware that involves welding
• Chemical, food-processing and pharma equipment
• Anywhere weld corrosion would be a failure point

When standard 316 is fine

• Non-welded fittings — spigots, brackets, bolted assemblies
• Applications where welds are minimal or not corrosion-critical

What about strength?

316L has slightly lower tensile strength than 316 because of the reduced carbon, but for most architectural and hardware uses the difference is not significant. Corrosion performance is the deciding factor, not strength.

Practical takeaway

If your 316 parts will be welded and live in salt or chlorine, specify 316L and confirm it on the mill test certificate. For bolted or clamped fittings, standard 316 is usually all you need. Not sure 316 is even needed? See 304 vs 316.
