Perforated & Expanded Metal Sheet: Types and Uses

Perforated and expanded sheets look similar from a distance but are made and used differently. Here is how to tell them apart and choose the right one.

Perforated sheet

A flat sheet with holes punched in a regular pattern. The sheet stays flat and the surrounding metal is intact between holes.

• Hole patterns: round, square, slotted, or decorative; various sizes and spacings
• Open area: chosen by hole size and spacing — more open area means more airflow/light but less strength
• Uses: facades and cladding, ventilation grilles, sunscreens, partitions, speaker and equipment covers, decorative screens

Expanded metal sheet

Made by slitting a sheet and stretching it, so the metal forms a mesh of diamond-shaped openings with no waste. Can be left raised (standard) or rolled flat (flattened).

• Look: a diamond mesh; strong for its weight
• Uses: walkways and platforms, safety grip, machine guards, fencing, security screens, ceilings

Key differences

• Perforated stays flat and decorative; precise, clean patterns. Some metal is removed (the punched-out slugs).
• Expanded is a mesh with a raised, grippy texture; no material waste; stronger for its weight.

Materials

Both are available in stainless steel (for corrosion resistance and appearance), mild steel (coated for structural and industrial use) and aluminium (lightweight facades and screens). Choose the metal for the environment — stainless or aluminium outdoors, coated mild steel where cost and strength lead.
