MS Angle, Channel & Beam Sizes: A Buyer's Reference

Mild steel sections are the backbone of fabrication and structural work — gates, frames, sheds, mezzanines and supports. Here is a reference to the common sections and where each is used.

MS angle (L-section)

An L-shaped section, equal or unequal legs. The everyday workhorse for frames, brackets, trusses and general fabrication.

• Common equal-angle sizes: 25×25, 35×35, 40×40, 50×50, 65×65, 75×75 mm and up
• Thickness typically 3–6 mm and above
• Uses: gates, grilles, frames, trusses, supports

MS channel (C / U-section)

A C-shaped section that resists bending well along its length — used where a member must span or carry load.

• Described by depth, e.g. 75, 100, 125, 150, 200 mm
• Uses: purlins, frames, machine bases, lintels, structural members

MS beams (I / H-section)

I- and H-shaped sections designed to carry significant load over a span — the primary structural members in many buildings.

• ISMB (I-beams) and ISHB/wide-flange (H-beams) in a range of depths
• Uses: columns, main beams, mezzanine floors, heavy structures
• Structural sizing should be done by an engineer for the load and span

Flats, squares and rounds

Alongside these, MS is stocked as flat bar, square bar and round bar for gates, grilles, reinforcement and general fabrication.

A note on protection

Mild steel rusts if left bare. For anything exposed, plan for painting, powder coating or galvanising. Where the member is visible and must resist corrosion without coating, stainless may be the better choice. MS vs stainless vs aluminium.

Give the section type, size, thickness and cut lengths. For structural work, have the sizing confirmed by your engineer, and ask about protective options.
