Glass Railing Spigots: A Complete Buyer's Guide (Types, Sizes & Finishes)

Frameless glass railings look clean and modern because the hardware holding the glass is minimal — and the hero of that hardware is the spigot. Choosing the right spigot decides how strong, safe and good-looking your railing will be. This guide covers everything you need to specify one correctly.

What is a glass spigot?

A spigot is a small, load-bearing stainless steel post that clamps the bottom edge of a toughened glass panel and anchors it to the floor. Because there is no top rail or frame, each spigot must hold the glass firmly against wind and leaning loads — so quality matters.

Mounting types

  • Core-drill (round base) — set into a drilled hole and grouted in. Cleanest look, needs a solid concrete slab.
  • Base-plate (side or top mount) — bolted to the surface or the side of a slab. Faster to install and easier to service; ideal where you cannot core-drill.

Standard sizes & glass thickness

Most residential and commercial spigots suit 12mm, 13.52mm and 15mm toughened or laminated glass. Always use toughened-laminated glass for balconies and elevated decks for safety. Spigot spacing is typically 200–500mm depending on glass size and wind load — your fabricator should confirm the layout.

Grade & finish

  • SS 304 for indoor and general outdoor railings.
  • SS 316 for pool fencing and coastal projects (chlorine and salt resistance).
  • Finishes: mirror-polished, brushed satin, and PVD colours — gold, rose gold, black — to match your interior.

Beyond spigots: the full railing kit

A complete frameless railing often also uses D-brackets, glass clamps, standoff/point fittings, handrail brackets and end caps. Matching all pieces in the same grade and finish keeps the look consistent and the corrosion resistance uniform.

Buying checklist

  • Confirm the glass thickness the spigot accepts
  • Pick the mounting type your structure allows
  • Choose SS 304 vs 316 based on exposure
  • Match the finish across all fittings
  • Ask for the grade certificate on structural work
