D-Brackets and Handrail Brackets: A Practical Guide

Brackets are the small parts that decide whether a railing feels solid or rattles. Here is how to specify them properly.

D-brackets (glass clamps)

Named for their D-shaped body, these clamp glass against a post or wall. They come in round-back and square-back styles.

• Round-back — for mounting on round posts; the curved back matches the tube
• Square-back / flat-back — for square posts and flat walls
• Glass range: most accept 8–12mm; heavy-duty versions take 15mm

Handrail brackets

• Wall brackets — hold a handrail off a wall; fixed or adjustable angle
• Saddles — sit on top of a post to cradle a round handrail
• Adjustable saddles — essential on staircases where the rail runs at an angle
• End caps and connectors — finish tube ends and join sections cleanly

Choosing correctly

1. Match the back profile to your post shape — a flat bracket on a round post will never sit right
2. Confirm the glass thickness range
3. On stairs, use adjustable saddles and brackets
4. Keep grade and finish identical to your spigots and handrail
5. Use SS 316 in wet or coastal areas

Common installation mistakes

• No gaskets — glass must never sit metal-to-metal; rubber inserts prevent chipping
• Over-tightening — cracks glass. Tighten evenly to the stated torque
• Too few brackets — follow the spacing your panel size requires
• Mixed finishes — buy everything together in one batch
