Cable Railing vs Glass Railing: Cost, Look and Maintenance

Cable and glass are the two most popular "see-through" railing styles. Both keep views open, but they behave very differently. Here is how to choose.

Stainless steel cable railing

Horizontal (or vertical) tensioned stainless cables running between posts, with a top handrail.

• Look: light, industrial, minimalist; views stay mostly open
• Cost: moderate — usually less than frameless glass
• Maintenance: low; occasional wipe-down and a check of cable tension
• Weather: lets wind and air through — good in hot climates

Frameless glass railing

Toughened glass panels held by floor-mounted spigots, with no posts or frame.

• Look: the most premium and completely open view; also blocks wind and dust
• Cost: higher — glass plus load-bearing spigots
• Maintenance: glass shows marks and needs regular cleaning
• Weather: acts as a windbreak; useful on exposed terraces

Key differences at a glance

• Wind & privacy: glass shelters from wind; cable lets air through. Neither offers much privacy.
• Cleaning: cable is far more forgiving; glass needs frequent wiping, especially through the monsoon.
• Cost: cable is usually the more economical open railing.
• Safety with children: horizontal cables can be climbed — consider vertical cables or glass where small children are present.

Grade matters for both

Whichever you choose, the stainless components must be the right grade: SS 304 for general outdoor use and SS 316 near the coast or a pool. Cheap 202 cables or fittings will streak and rust outdoors. See the grade guide.

• Want low maintenance, airflow and a lighter budget → cable railing
