PVD Coating on Stainless Steel: Gold, Rose Gold & Black Finishes Explained

That rich gold, rose gold or matte black steel you see on premium railings and glass fittings is almost always PVD-coated stainless steel. Here is what PVD is, why designers prefer it, and where it works best.

What is PVD coating?

PVD stands for Physical Vapour Deposition. Inside a vacuum chamber, a thin layer of metal (such as titanium or zirconium) is vaporised and bonded to the stainless steel surface at a molecular level. The result is a hard, thin, decorative coloured layer that becomes part of the metal — not a paint sitting on top.

Why PVD beats plating and paint

• Durability — scratch, corrosion and fade resistant; far tougher than electroplating.
• Colour that lasts — does not chip or peel like paint and resists tarnishing.
• Thin & precise — keeps the sharp edges and fine detail of the original fitting.
• Eco-friendlier — a cleaner process than traditional electroplating.

Where PVD steel is used

Glass railing spigots and clamps, handrails, standoff fittings, door hardware, partitions, signage and decorative pillars. Because the colour is bonded to SS 304 (or 316 for wet areas), you get the strength of stainless steel with a premium finish.

Caring for PVD surfaces

Wipe with a soft, damp cloth — no abrasive pads or harsh chemicals. Done right, a PVD finish holds its colour for many years, indoors and in covered outdoor areas.
