How to Clean and Maintain PVD Coated Steel (Without Ruining It)

PVD coating is hard and durable — but it is a thin surface layer, and the wrong cleaning product will dull or scratch it permanently. Here is the safe routine.

Do this

• Wipe with a soft microfibre cloth, slightly damp with plain water
• For marks, use a mild pH-neutral soap diluted in warm water
• Always wipe in the direction of the grain on brushed finishes
• Dry immediately with a clean cloth to avoid water spots
• Clean high-touch rails weekly to stop fingerprint oils building up

Never do this

• No abrasive pads — steel wool, scouring pads and magic erasers will scratch through the coating
• No bleach or chlorine cleaners — these attack both the coating and the steel beneath
• No acidic descalers or strong toilet/tile cleaners
• No abrasive powders
• No metal polish — polishes are designed to abrade; PVD needs no polishing

Removing common marks

• Fingerprints: damp microfibre, then dry
• Water spots: mild soap solution, rinse, dry immediately
• Adhesive residue: a little isopropyl alcohol on a soft cloth, then wash and dry
• Cement splashes: remove while wet — dried cement often cannot be removed without damage

During construction

Most PVD damage happens before handover. Keep the protective film on until site work is finished, and never let grinding sparks land on coated surfaces — they embed and cause permanent spotting.

How long will it last?
